random likes and dislikes

Because you know you've been dying to know these things about me . . .

Dislikes
Werewolves: Seriously, if you know me, then you already know this about me. I hate werewolves. No, I despise, loathe, detest werewolves. If you're wanting to give me a heart attack, show up anywhere I am dressed as a werewolf. I will undoubtedly faint, poop, and die. I just don't the exact order in which I'll do that. I'm just going to stop now. I'm getting all heebie-jeebied.

Baboons: I don't like them. Never have. I'm pretty sure it's their obscene ass and their unfortunate nose. What's more is that I think they're smug. Like a fat guy at the beach that thinks he's hot. You're not, fat guy and you're not either, baboons. Stop it.
I don't think I'd feel the least bit sad if I heard baboons were on the verge of extinction.

Likes
Sock Puppets: Seriously, need I say more? Sock puppets are all kinds of awesome and hilarious! If anyone ever wants to give me really bad news and does it with a sock puppet, I'd probably be cracking up. "You're fired", "Here are your eviction papers", and "The dog ate your wedding band" would all be gladly applauded if delivered by someone wearing a sock puppet. Awesome.

Looney Tunes: Again, total awesomeness. My husband says that I say at least one looney tunes quote a day. I'm not going to comment on that except to say that I've considered putting my name and "Genius" on my mailbox.
I also feel like a grumpy old man about Looney tunes because when I see some of the crap cartoons my kids watch now, I say something like "What's this? These cartoons aren't any good. Now, Bugs Bunny, those were cartoons!".

This link today. I was in tears while reading some of these. Mostly because I understood. I wrote muahahaha once and it turned into "mustaches". Not cool . . . and definitely NOT what I was going for.

a post about nothing

- The phrase "At the end of the day" is at the top of my sh*t list right now. The trouble is that I hear it EVERYWHERE. Ugh, it makes me cringe.

- Brianna was picking on Alec and he told her she was the worst person in the world (it was more like "the vorst person in the vorld". He said it just like they do on this show. I probably shouldn't watch it every single day.

- I know you all know it's hot in Arizona. Duh. But it's been so hot and HUMID. It's awful. The poor emo kids walking around have their make-up melting off. I figure they're depressed enough already and laughing at them might not help, but I couldn't help it. I guess it's hard to be emo in Arizona.

- No one I know in person is as far as I am in the Twilight series. I totally pressured my friend into reading them, but she's barely on the second book. I'm dying to tell someone "Can you believe that Bella . . . . . ." I considered joining a book club but I'd hate to be the only adult there.

- It's J@nas Brother/C@mp Rock fever around here. Brianna got one of those book order sheets from school yesterday. Three of the four books she wants are about those certain brothers. That and ohmygodicantbelievethenewcdcomesoutnextweek! <-- to be read exactly like that without taking a breath. Rodrigo and I were joking about having a bunch of more babies to make a band.

- I just found out that the kids' school prohibits skulls on clothes. Uh, nice timing. Brianna's messenger bag has skulls and flowers on it. Plus several of her new school outfits have little skulls on them. They're in style. You know the skulls with a tiara and/or flowers. I wonder if cute skulls are an exception.

That's it. I know I had more things I wanted to say but I can't think now. It's way too hot and my brain is fried.

hola again

I didn't plan it, but I was away from my computer for almost two weeks. I didn't even check email, read other blogs . . . nothing. No computer, no internet usage for almost two weeks straight cold turkey. I think if I'd tried to do it, it wouldn't have worked out; it was just a busy time.

- The kids are out of school now and we successfully completed a 3rd grade "Luau" and a Pre-K water fun day. I went to both, helped organize one and I'm still here. I had poor Rodrigo helping me fill hundreds of water balloons the night before one of them. I'll tell you this, I don't want to be that many kids at once for a looooooong time.

- We came this close to buying another car. My Civic is getting old and we were looking to trade it in. When we came to signing the papers for the purchase, we were told that in Arizona there is no law where you have a couple of days to change your mind. That sort of did it. It was a used (excuse me, certified pre-owned) car, so we felt sort of pressured and backed out. Plus, you really can't beat my little Civic's gas mileage.

- We got a Wii Fit last Wednesday. I LOVE it. I was lucky too because we didn't have one reserved. My friend mentioned that she went to Target right when it opened to buy one. She said there was a line of about 20 people. I decided to stop by on the off chance that there were any left. There were two. They were out of the yoga mats and some other ski game, but I got the Fit. We're all hooked! It should tell you how pathetic we are that both Rodrigo and I ended up with sore arms from playing the boxing game. Sad. Oh, and the truth hurts. Seeing it out there every day on the screen is a real incentive to get moving.

- I just read an email asking me if we'd had waffles and balloons for Rodrigo's birthday. We did have balloons but no waffles for dinner. I made him some green enchiladas which is his favorite food. Yes, all from scratch. I bought him a German chocolate cake, also his favorite. We gave him a few gifts and the kids also made him some gifts. Brianna made him this amazing card, art thingy with copper paint or copper or something. It was layers of black and copper and embossed designs. I was quite shocked and impressed that she made it herself. I don't know how she did it, but it's hanging at Rodrigo's work now.

That's it for now, I have a lot to catch up on . . . . .

matchmaker yvett

I know a lady named Cinnamon. Rodrigo knows a man whose last name is Sprinkles. If they weren't each already married, it would become my life's mission to get them to marry each other. Wouldn't that be awesome? I've never met anyone with one of those names i.e. Ivana Tinkle or something like that. Have you?

Easter weekend wrap-up

Thanks all for your kind comments and emails about Alec. He's doing much better. I hope everyone's Easter weekend went well. My parents came over to share the warm weather. We took the kids to an Easter egg hunt, had a cook-out and played on the Wii. The rest of the time, my parents were out with the kids so that Rodrigo and I could go out and do the "dinner and a movie" thing without kids for once. We totally ruined our chance to watch a movie that isn't rated G, by choosing a crap film. We saw Shutter, ugh. I was in the mood for something sort of creepy and not a drama for a change, but I should've gone to see my favorite genre instead. Shutter was better the first time when it was called The Grudge. Apart from a few moments that startle you and make you jump, it wasn't the least bit scary.
We did have dinner at a place we're almost sure the kids wouldn't like, so that was a plus. Whenever Rodrigo and I are out by ourselves, I like to have dinner at a place where there are no kid menus and they hate kids. Ah, my type of place. :P
I don't have much more to say today. The weather is lovely, lovely, lovely. We're having a nice and warm 84 degrees today, so I plan on being outside with Alec and Badger as much as I can. I had planned on walking to the grocery store until I saw on the news this morning that snakes are up from hibernating and we should be careful when walking. Drat. Time to sign up Badger for a snake avoidance course (yes, those are offered here). Anyway, have a pleasant day all. {{{ Here's sending you all warm thoughts and some desert sunshine }}}

mood yvett

Let me tell you how I've been feeling lately . . . .

- confused: I started watching Project Runway last night thinking that both Chris & Rami were going to show. I had been on the website and had seen pictures of their collections along with Sweet Pea's. I thought they were all still in the running and I was just so clever to know in advance. Today I found out all five showed but only three are in the running to win. Oh! So, I haven't been too much of a fan of Christian, but his final collection really is, well, fierce.

- a little stir crazy: We've been having 80 degree temperatures and I'm now sporting a February tan. I'm really wanting to do some sort of day trip soon before it becomes too hot to be outside. It seems that we're all in the same frame of mind around here. Friends have spend the past few days at the zoo, camping and at the desert museum. Read this twice because you hardly ever get this from me. . . . I want to do something outdoorsy this weekend.

- like I can't write: I've changed my last name. The thing is that it now feels weird to sign my name. It doesn't come as easily as my old last name that I've written my entire life. I think I'll practice writing my name a million times in a notebook like when we were in middle school.

- political: For the past few months, I have been completely addicted to political shows. Completely. I went into almost all of the candidates websites and read up on the issues and their plans way before pur primary. I wanted to be well informed before I made a decision. Well, it's sort of rubbing off on the kids. Alec went with me on Super Tuesday and he asked me if I was voting for him to be president. I lied and said yes and since then he's been talking about how he's going to be president and live in the White House because I voted for him. Aww. You'll also probably guess which is one of the shows I watch nightly when I tell you that Alec is now calling various people, "The Worst Person in the Woooooooorld". (He pronounces it "vorld")

- busy: I've been volunteering in Brianna's classroom weekly and let me tell you . . that class is busy, busy, busy. They are on a rigid schedule and are always doing something. I have my hands full each time I'm in there. I seriously get home exhausted. All the noise and all the kids and all the work and all the talking and all the moving. Their teacher deserves to be canonized.

- weepy: I saw "Away From Her". Bawl fest. I must've cried about five times throughout the movie. Ah, depressing movies, my favorite. Seriously. We also watched "La Vie en Rose". Wow, she really, really did a great job. Oscar well deserved.

- In love: I love Rodrigo. I thought everyone should know.

feeling: see all the above
listening to: some Edith Piaf songs*

* I need help. I'm looking for a song that was in La Vie en Rose. Although, I think it's Edith Piaf, I'm not sure. It comes out in the part where Edith is little and she can't see. She's walking with Titine and bumps into a pole. Do any of you know the name of that song?

my ho-hum life

I haven't been in the writing mood because I don't really have anything to write about. Everything that has been happening in the last few days (save Saturday) has been really, really mundane.

- I've done my weekly share at volunteering at the kids' school.
- My car has some kind of hose that's leaking and we need to get that fixed.
- The weather here has been c-r-a-z-y! Last week we were at about 80 degrees, then it got all windy, then it snowed on Friday. Yes, snowed. That fake sort of desert snow, but still. Then it got all warm again.
- My parents came to visit this weekend. It gave Rodrigo and me a chance to go eat at my now favorite place in the world. Read my review here.
- I'm completely dying over the Target Easter theme! I love, love, love chicks and ducklings. (I call them pollitos). I have convinced myself that I need as much of these Chiyo Chiyo things as possible. I was wrong to think they couldn't top their Valentine's cupcake theme.
- The kids have a four day weekend for Rodeo. Read it again . . . for Rodeo. That's right, it's sort of a big deal here. Odd, huh?
- If you were in town this weekend, there'd be this, this and this we could do. Plus, you'd be out of the cold.
- Oh, and I finally started reading something other than a Harry Potter book. Eh.
- I almost forgot about the Oscars! I haven't seen anything this year. Sucks. By this time we usually have our prediction sheets filled out. I'm sure we'll still do it, but it'll really be just guesses.

Have a good day, all!

the #1 thing I need to stop doing

Halloween went off without a hitch. The weather was so amazing that loads of neighbors were having cook-outs, sitting outside handing out candies and passing out food. I LOVE where I live. There was such an aura of friendship outside last night with everyone over at everyone else's house, all the kids recognizing each other. I just can't describe it, but it was awesome.
We were one of the houses that had a cook-out. Rodrigo had some co-workers over ready to scare the trick-or-treaters, the kids had friends and their parents over and I hung out with everyone. It was pretty awesome. Then someone left without Alec noticing and he came and asked me, "Did Jake Long go home?". I was mortified, but luckily nobody heard.
You see, I have this horrible habit of giving people nicknames. I don't mean it in a cruel or mocking way. It just sort of happens. It could be how someone looks (like if they remind me of someone), what someone does, or something they say. I was thinking about how I have to stop doing this since now the kids are aware of it. Thinking about it, I made a list of the nicknames I regularly refer to people as. Just within people we see on a regular basis are: Jake Long, Voldemort, F*f*fini (replace each "*" with an "a". I didn't want any searches ending up here. Also, look up what it means since this is my favorite nickname), the quails, the basketball players, the frat house, hot dog, tattoo, the funnies, the office, the scotty. I think the list can go on and on. See what I mean? Am I horrible? (here's the part where you leave a comment and say that I'm not awful and make me feel better) What's more is that I've always done this. Old friends and ex co-workers can certainly vouch for this. So, yeah, I think I should stop since I really don't want the kids to be doing the same thing. Except for Voldemort because I can't remember his real name and he really does look an awful lot like Voldemort (from the last two movies) I'm not the only one that does this am I? Rodrigo and I were wondering what other people call us behind our backs. Hee, hee.

psst . . . .

Don't you just hate it when life gets in the way of blogging? I've been pretty busy around here. Not any one thing in particular, just everything. Plus, I've been making myself stay away from the computer as much as possible in order to do the things I feel I need to do. In the time I've been away . . .

- We went to Texas for Labor day weekend to hang out with our families. Came back and were totally off on dates.
- Received an awesome, awesome goody box from the awesome, awesome Jenn.
- Helped chaperon a field trip for Alec's pre-k class. I'd like to say I won't do that again, but there's another one coming up.
- Had the first parent/teacher conference with Brianna's teacher. All's well.
- Discovered an amazing local market.
- Had some yummy barbecues at home.
- Had a hard time separating myself from Mr. Harry Potter.
- shopped, shopped, shopped some more
- have been going CRAZY trying to get the kids to agree on a Halloween costume. When I was a kid, I would've loved for my mom to make me a costume. She always bought those horrible plastic costumes that you could hardly breathe in. These kids refuse to let me make their costumes. WTF?
- Have made about a dozen attempts at updating my blog, saved several drafts but never finished.
- Received a few emails asking if I was ok. Aww. . you love me.
- Watched the VMA's. The first time around, before all the hype. Was shocked and sad.
- Have been trying to get our garage looking like something out of Mission Organization.

That's all I can think of now. I've been neglecting my bloggy reads, so I'll trying to finish here and do that now.

weekend review

I hope everyone had a good weekend. Mine was really good. It seemed sort of long. Rodrigo has a three day weekend every other week and this was one of his "off Fridays". It always makes it seem like the weekend starts earlier with him around. In a good way.
Friday we were forbidden by Brianna to go anywhere. If we had any errands to run, we absolutely HAD to be home early. Why? It was the premiere of High School Musical 2, of course. Duh! WE'VE ONLY BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR ALMOST A YEAR. So, we were home. She was able to watch her movie, then again, then again.
Saturday we were allowed to leave. We had the usual errands to run (Trader Joe's and such). For "linner" we went to El Guero Canelo. Think of your idea of the most delicious food you've had in years. Now try to imagine that as a hot dog. I'd read a lot of good reviews about this place and it definately met all my expectations. Although I hadn't really shared my yelp page with many people, you could read my review here. note: there are about a million other reviews for this place, but I went to a different location, so it shows as only one review
Now, about my yelp account, I was nearly hyperventilating this morning when I posted a review and noticed that I am now an "Elite". YAY! You guys that are already at that status know what a super proud moment this is. Yay, yay, yay for me! I rock.

loteria

You guys have heard about Loteria, right? It's like a Mexican version of Bingo. I remembered because I saw a commercial on Bravo where there were some drag queens playing bingo. They said something like "if you want to date Michael Jackson, you must B-14". Well, this reminded me because in Loteria, there's all these sayings for each card. I never knew them. My dad knew a few but he'd mostly just make them up on the spot to make us laugh. My grandmother said she vaguely remembered some but not many at all. For a while there, I really wanted to find out the sayings and they were nowhere online. (this was in about 2001) So I had been asking some friends and one of them said that her mom knew the sayings. She told me that the next time they played, she'd write them down for me or else she'd just ask her mom. A few weeks later, she took me a sheet of paper with the loteria sayings. I thanked her but there was only one on there. I noticed and told her. She explained that at first she forgot. Then her mom was talking too fast and then she was just concentrating on the game. Argh! Her answer sounded so "Three Stooges" to me that I felt like slapping her or poking her eyes while saying nyuk, nyuk, nyuk.
Anyway, I never did get them. I started writing here to ask my Spanish speaking buddies (which I like to call "my lurkers who never comment") if you guys knew them to send them to me. Then I looked up "loteria" on wikipedia and all the sayings are there! Only my heart is now sinking to see that neither my kids nor Rodrigo would understand any of these. Oh, and I don't even own a loteria game. That can be fixed. Uh, so do any of you know the saying with maybe a little more "border Spanish"? I don't mean to throw in English words but something more like the phrases they'd say at like church bazaar games? There's no real reason I want them, so there's no hurry. I'll be your best friend!

baby names

I'm not pregnant. I don't plan on being pregnant anytime soon or maybe ever again. Yet I am always thinking of baby names. Is that normal? I hear a name and think "oh, that's a nice name" or "what a horrible name". I usually try it out like how it would sound with our last name(s). I think about what I'd name a new baby. A girl, a boy, twin girls, twin boys, twin boy and girl.
The problem is that if I really had to name a baby, and I was able to do it just on my own, that baby would end up with a weirdo celebrity baby name. Names like Echo, Desert or Stellar. Yeah, I would do that. Luckily, I don't think ANYONE in my family would approve. That would stop me.
I find it funny how something like names is sooooooo subjective. I mean you can have a friend with similar tastes on almost everything except for names. Hmm, I wonder if any of my friends hate my kids' names and just never mentioned it. Uh, do you?

I just found this article. See what I mean? I bet you these people's friends and relatives didn't think they were crazy before. Brianna and Alec are lucky they aren't named Hello Kitty and Bono or BrandonBoyd (one word).

recipe organizing help?

This weekend went by in a flash. We did more of the same thing that we've been doing for a while now: doing things for the new house. We bought a pastel colored ceiling fan for Brianna's room, a garage door opener and some of the curtains that we want. We still need a lot of things. We have living room furniture and furniture for the den/office but now we're also having a family room and we have nothing for that. Also, we have a dining room set but now we're also going to have a breakfast area and we have nothing for that either. Oh well. There's no hurry for anything. We just want to have everything already.
I've been trying to get everything all organized for a while now. So far I've been pleased with what I've done. My whole vision of "there's a place for everything" is going well. The one thing that I don't have organized, though is all the recipe papers I have. I have some saved on my computer, I have some printed out, I have magazine pages, just too many things. So, here's my question . . how do you organize your recipes? I mean those other than in a cookbook. I've seen recipe boxes and have been leaning towards that, but then I think maybe a nice recipe scrapbook might be nice. Give me suggestions please.

3-D

I went to pick up Brianna from school yesterday and was waiting for her where all the parents wait. There is a fence that separates the school yard from this area. Some mom was standing next to me. I don't know her name but I see her there all the time. Every time I hear her talk, I think something she said is dumb. Some kids were in the school yard playing around with a football. Then they threw it towards us and it hit the fence. Then that mom said, "Whoa, that almost looked like it was in 3-D!" Seriously? I couldn't say anything back to her. I was trying very, very hard not to laugh. I also wasn't doing a good job because I was sort of snickering like when you're somewhere that you're not supposed to be laughing. Yeah, I know she probably meant she meant something like "That was really coming towards us" or something like that, but what she said was just soooooooo dumb. I think I'm just going to stand next to her all the time now and hear what other things she says.

house/ cd help needed

After having waited for months, we were told that it looks like our house will be ready around the first week of May. Uh-oh. I had originally planned to move this past December. That was the deal. Then we saw that there was no way that was going to happen. The house (or dirt, rather at than time) was no where near ready. We were told and thought it would be somewhere around July. That's kind of what I had in mind. Now that it's sooner, I feel like I'm going to be rushed again. I guess it sounds like I'm complaining, but I'm really not. I REALLY, REALLY want to be in our house now, it just seemed sort of sudden. Like waiting, waiting, waiting, then everything happened all at once.
Anyway, this past weekend, Rodrigo finally went through some of his computer junk and got rid of a bunch of old software Cd's. Now I have a pile of Cd's. I figure that I could make something with them, but apart from coasters, I can't think of anything. Should I just toss them? Should I save them and make him a geek Christmas tree? I thought of breaking them and making some sort of shiny mosaic, but come on, I'm not going to have the patience for that. Besides, it would look sort of kitschy, no? Let me know if you have any ideas. Please. I'm this close to just throwing them away.
Lastly, I think I have the whole playing around with my new operating system done with. Yes, I have Vista now. Stop right there. Don't try to tell me about how much better a Mac is. I've heard it. Almost every day. Anyway, now that I'm done playing around, I'm going to try to post more regularly. Take care and Happy Passover.

pictures and computer woes

I finally have the Spring Break pictures organized. You can see them here.

It was such an ordeal uploading and organizing them because I've been having computer trouble. I'm lucky to enough to say that I don't have computer problem often, but when it does happen, well, you've been through it too. It sucks. Luckily, I have a computer guy living in the same house as me. I know that anything that breaks down will be fixed by him. He LOVES doing that kind of thing which is both good and bad. Bad because he'll take the opportunity to change a whole bunch of things and that takes longer. I now have a new harddrive, a new dvd drive and a new operating system (Don't quote me on those things. I'm just typing what I think I remember him saying).
It's pretty sad to realize how much you rely on your computer when you can't use it. Also, I had about a MILLION things I wanted to blog about and I couldn't. Yes, I actually had material and like a huge dork I wrote down a list. You'd think that I'd use one of our other computers (Rodrigo's computer, his laptop, his mac) but the truth is that I don't know how to use it. He had linux in everything else and I don't even know how to get online. Sad. Sad. Anyway, I have several emails I want to write, prints I want to order from Kodak before the sale is over, and I also want to catch up on all my bloggy friends. By the way, if you are one of my messenger contacts and you've seen me signing in and out for days, sorry. I had no control over that.

new look

You're probably sick of seeing new templates here all the time. Ok, I think this is going to stay the same for a while. For a long time now, I'd wanted something very simple, pink, green and with daisies. Last night I started messing around and thought I had a template I loved. I was just like this one but when I saved the changes, the whole right column was at the bottom of the page. I stayed up until around 1:00 a.m. trying to fix it and kept messing it up even more.
Anyway, I think I have it fixed now. It's pretty frustrating that when I hit the "preview" button, it would look ok, but once it was saved it was different. This morning I kept saving and discarding. If you came in here earlier, you probably saw some sort of half completed template.
Anyway, I don't have much time to post today. I'm making Valentine's fairy halos for the little girls in my daughter's class. Have a good day!

still here!

I had a super long post planned, but you guys are going to have to settle for this one. Since I last wrote . . . .

- I helped at a very . . uh, different winter party at Brianna's school
- we went to Texas for the holidays
- we ate a lot
- Brianna turned 8 years old
- I was foolishly mobile posting from Texas using the wrong Blogger account (hence my lack of Christmas posts)
- I'm actually keeping my resolution so far
- we got new bedroom furniture for Brianna

Every year I make some sort of half assed resolution just because it's the thing to do. I've never actually kept one. This year, I was adamant about really doing what I've wanted for while . . . . mega organizing. I've wanted a place for everything for the longest time. The problem was that we just have so many papers and Rodrigo has so much computer stuff. This year I decided that I wouldn't allow myself to do something I enjoy until I actually did what I was set to do that day. I decided I wouldn't be an active bloggy girl until I did as much organizing for that day as I had set out to do. BIG CHANGE! Boxes of papers (old receipts, bills, and things we no longer need) were all shredded, all the papers we do need are filed and labeled, the closets are cleaned out, the kids drawers and toy boxes are cleaned out, pictures are sorted and ready to be placed in scrapbooks, just so many things. I am sooooooo happy! Anyway, I'm satisfied at how I haven't slacked so far so I decided to pop in. So far, so good so I think I won't have to force myself to be an absent bloggy so much anymore. I hope all is well!

Here is a little mosaic of the time I've been away. . . .
